Hit the Trail
When you’re ready for a long walk through the woods, you can lace up your hiking boots and explore the 20-mile-long Conecuh Trail. This scenic, winding trail will lead you along shimmering waters, by rolling streams, and through acres of longleaf pine woods. All trails showcase the vibrant biodiversity of this sprawling ecosystem, and you’re sure to hear birds chirping overhead, while other forest residents might be spotted in the foliage. If you take the south loop, you’ll come across Blue Springs, a natural spring where stunning cobalt waters flow.
Cast a Line
The forest’s Conecuh Trail leads you around the Open Pond Recreational Area, a serene aquatic escape where you can picnic and fish with family and friends. Created by a limestone sinkhole, the Open Pond has been a popular attraction within Conecuh National Forest for decades. Guests are welcome to glide along the surface in a non-motorized boat, or stay on the shore and cast their lines for bountiful fishing. Whenever you reel in, you might come away with catfish, bass, bream, or bluegill.
Rough it
There’s always plenty to do out in the forest, and with the trials, boating, and fishing to fill your day, you might want to stay in Conecuh National Forest over the weekend to have time to do it all. The Campgrounds around Open Pond provide easy access to the water and recreational space, and you can also utilize the onsite facilities for hot showers and other comforts. The sites are combination lots for either RVs or tents, allowing you to plan for either modern conveniences or a true primitive camping experience.
